Book Review: Coffee Cozies

I didn't want to start my return posts with a bunch of book reviews, so I decided to do a finished piece post.  I sat outside and took some pictures before remembering that I don't have my camera cord and I'm at my dad's for a few days for subbing.  My little netbook (I feel he needs a name...) doesn't have a memory card slot so there's no way for me to get the pictures off the camera right now.  I have an extra Canon cord somewhere an ex-boyfriend left behind that I should keep with the extra laptop power cord.  So a finished object coming soon, but for now here's a book review!

Coffee Cozies (Cozy)

I love coffee.  I've never liked to make coffee though.  For one person, it's always hard to get the proportions right.  Until I got my mini French coffee press.  I love it.  Now I do have a regular sized one (such as the ones used as models in this book), but I love my mini one because it's the perfect size for just one mug of coffee.

As soon as I saw this book at the library I knew I had to take it out.  I don't have tea pots to decorate with knitting so here's my niche.  The book is a collection of submissions to a design contest, though they don't tell you which is the winner.  There are some simple designs and some very detailed ones.  I think they're all great and want to make pretty much every single one (doesn't matter that I only have one regular sized press of course).  Here's the Ravelry page for the book and now for a look at my favorites:

Rainbow Rib- This pattern plays up Noro's best asset:  its beautiful colors.  It's made of a simple rib stitch, letting the color progression take the stage.  It was photographed in the book with the types of really fun buttons that I never seem to have a real use for.  This may finally be an excuse for me to try some Noro.

Cotton Candy (no Rav page)- This one was fun and chunky.  It definitely did remind me of cotton candy.  Mmmm :o)

Fringe Folk- This cozy is knit one row per strand of yarn to create a simple fringe.  It's a great way to use up lots of little leftovers.  I might use my leftovers from the NLC for this when it's eventually done.

Pearly Queen- This was a simple plain stitch pattern with Mother of Pearl buttons sewn into the shape of simple flowers.  Now you may not want to spend money on Mother of Pearl, but I think it's a great way to use up the spare buttons from button-down shirts and such.

Cappuccino- This is awesome!  I absolutely LOVE this one.  It's another with a plain stitch pattern, but the image of an Italian style coffee cup complete with steam stitched into it.  This is the perfect cozy for a French press.

Shortbread Crunch-  This was something I don't see using very often.  It was the typical Christmas colored plaid I had on my Christmas nightgown as a kid.  It would be perfect to use on Christmas with your family or even as the perfect Christmas gift.

Ducks on Parade- The way this one is pictured, it looks too much like it should be a bathroom decoration or for a baby boy's room.  I think I'd like it better if the blue was darker (you know, what water actually looks like?).  I do have to say it did make me awwwww when I first saw it.

Cable Classic- This pattern is exactly what it's name says:  a simple clean cable pattern to adorn a press.

Straight from the Tree- This piece is more artwork than functional.  It deserves to be center stage on any coffee table.  It consists of colorwork depicting a tree.  This is the one I'm saddest about not having a Ravelry page for all of you to see.  I guess you'll just have to check the book out yourself.

Woven Stripes- Now usually when a knit piece is "woven" the stitch pattern calls for some variation of the basketweave stitch.  Not here.  I love that this is actually crochet strips that are woven and sewn together.  The only thing I didn't like about this pattern was the giant bobbles in the back at the seam.

Bollywood Bling- This piece is beautiful but entirely dependent upon the yarn.  It was a simple stitch done with recycled silk sari scraps which of course gave it a nice sheen.  The one in the book has little gold coin charms dangling giving it that extra umph.

Coffee and Cake- This is a perfect pairing.  A plain pink cozy with knit cupcakes sewn on...what more can you ask for?  Well, yea the coffee to go with it.  The designer also placed pastel buttons around the cupcakes.  This one has embellishment to the max!

A great thing about this book is that there is a helpful section in the back on adjusting yarns and the importance of tension.  Most coffee presses are a standard size, but you never know when one company will differ from another.  They of course also have the typical knitting technique section too, just in case, you know, you forget how to purl or something.

I only have one regular coffee press (that I never used because of its larger size) and yet I want to make almost every pattern in this book.  I am concerned about actually using one of these because there's always coffee drippage and not all of these are washable.  Plus coffee stains.  So if you do want to make one, maybe make two.  One for show when the press isn't being used and one that is nice but durable and without too much work that you wouldn't be devastated if it did get a stain.

I'm Back!!

It is unbelievable how busy I've been since March.  Not only with the non-blogging, but I'm behind on my podcasts, blogs I read, and all my TV shows.  Of course there has been knitting though.  How else would I have made it through all that with my sanity??

I have lots and lots to update on...my gosh where to start.  The guild has finally settled on a name:  Brooklyn Fiber Arts Guild.  Some wanted to avoid this name because if we shortened it to an acronym it would be BFAG and well some people just weren't comfortable with that.  Though I said I'd rather BFAG than BNAG (Brooklyn Needle Arts Guild, another option).  But I pointed out that we don't have to shorten every word.  So BFA Guild  it is!  And now we have our name, I can really get started on working on the website.  I've been sketching out some plans so I'm excited for that.  Also at yesterday's meeting, we had Trisha Malcolm, editor of Vogue Knitting, come do a presentation.  This will get a post of its own because I don't have the wires I need to download the pictures...and those are a must for that topic!

So school's over for me until mid-July.  It's so weird to have nothing to do.  I woke up Saturday and literally sat on my bed staring at the wall not sure what to do.  I mean, there are things I should be doing, but nothing I have to do.  It was great.  I caught up on some TV.  I will be working on developing my Etsy shop.  I have some products in mind, but nothing too big right now.  Maybe someday down the road.  Really right now I want to start destashing and finishing UFOs.

Also, since I don't have to worry about classes and I was at the library already, I took out 4 knitting books that will be getting some reviews coming up.  Check back soon (if there's anyone still out there haha)!!

Blog Announcement

I'm taking a sabbatical from the blog for a bit.  Don't worry, I'll be back soon though!

Where am I going?  Physically, no where unfortunately.  I'm going to be taking this time to finish up my semester (without feeling guilty about not blogging), taking pictures with my new camera, enjoying the nice weather outside, trying to find a summer job, and developing my etsy shop.  Depending how things go, I'd also like to try to make some adjustments to the blog.

My semester ends the second week in May.  As of right now, I'm not taking any classes again until mid-July so I'll have plenty of time then to knit and blog.  Hopefully I'll be working somewhere in there too of course.

Etsy Shop Feature: Flux Productions

I wrote this post over a month ago and for some reason never posted it.  I'm posting it now, but beware that some of the shop items may no longer be listed there.  I still love this shop though so definitely give it a look over.

Remember a couple weeks ago I mentioned a booth at Brooklyn Flea that I loved but couldn't find the business card to?  Found it!  I think it was hiding in a bag of a knitting project, of course.

Flux Productions

Flux Productions is "a small company which emphasizes care and craft rather than mass production." (stolen off the Etsy page).  Like I said last time, these shirts are super soft.  The prints are so fun.  Click the images to be take to the Etsy listing!!

sheer smoke signal vneck

This is my favorite and what caught my eye at the booth.  I absolutely love the smoke print.

womens organic boatneck tree tee

gauze bamboo vneck

A sample of them men's shirts:

heather gray bicycle pedal shirt

I love this shirt. The print is so creative.

mens smoke signal slub v

Of course I have to show the smoke shirt in the men's version :o)

All of these products are made in Brooklyn, which I of course love.  Definitely go check out the full shop!

PS check out this business card (and please excuse my poor quality cell phone pics...really need a camera)

Front

Back
These cards are great!  Simple with a great logo.  And the back is so cute.  It's a simple road map over the bamboo plants print.  Unique and creative.  The cards themselves are printed on a thiiiick cardstock (plus) with nicely rounded edges (plus plus!).  Where can I get cards like these?  (says the girl who just got 250 cards in the mail and might get 500 more free...thank you Vistaprint.)

BK Bloggers Meetup

Ok fair warning ahead of time.  This post will have little to do with knitting.

Wednesday night I went to the Brooklyn Blogger Meetup held at the Bell House with Roommie.  It was hosted by (in my opinion) some of the best and most popular Brooklyn blogs:  Brokelyn, Fucked in Park Slope, and Brooklyn Based.  Basically, they decided to just hold open invites for everyone to network.  It was pretty interesting with some quirky people there (to say the least).

Here's a rundown of everyone I talked to (aka who's cards I got):

Jessica from eFlirtExpert- for a fee, they'll help you with your online dating (which I heard on a commercial for the news yesterday morning that a very high percentage of New Yorkers use)
Georgia from Savor Your Food- eating healthy, happily, ethically and affordably (from her site)
Ben from Practice Safe Policy- though he tried to steal my hat, he has an awesome product:  Obama, Palin, McCain condoms.  Yes I'm serious
Faye from Brokelyn- she took a picture of me and Roommie.  Totally will let you know if they post it on the site
David (and a female intern who's name I can't remember but I did give Guild info to for her friend) from Urban Oyster- they've just started but it sounds awesome.  Walking tours of the city (starting with Brooklyn currently).  I so wanna do the Brewed in Brooklyn one.
Ryan from InvestorNation- who has only been here a bit and sells real estate to New Yorkers as investment.  And he insists I'm the Knitting Queen so yea he's awesome
Erik from Trinimation- Erik has an awesome blog where he takes fast food and turns it into real looking meals.  Although I don't see why Chipotle has to be remade...it's amazing already.  He also has a graphic Tshirt gig going.  Still loving the Periodic Table of Brooklyn shirt he was wearing!
Robicelli's Cupcakes were there too! (I had the caramel macchiato cupcake.  It was ok- not nearly as good as Roommie's)

After on our way home, Roommie (very boldly according to one of the guys) stopped 2 guys also heading back from the meetup:
David from The Huffington Post- a news site that David said had something needlepoint of a computer? on it Wednesday that I can't seem to find.  David, if you read this send me the link!
Stan  from Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma- a resource for journalists who cover violence

Two ladies who's cards I did not get (but definitely remembered) are:
Johanna from  Pretty Girls Use Knives- a site about awesome chicks and awesome food.  She knits!  Yay!  I definitely informed her of this weekend's Guild meeting- see you there!
Romy from Dough Re Me Kids- Romy started with her dauhter's day care and now teaches cooking to children regularly.  We got into a big convo about this because that was my favorite thing to do with the kids working at the daycare.  Sigh, I miss my babies.

Overall, it was a pretty good night.  Some good networking and I passed out a bunch of business cards.  Met some cool people.

Oh, I should probably mention one more blog (duh)

Nicole from Caketease- My lovely lovely wonderful awesome roommate's blog!  Obviously she has one too since she's the one who I went with.  Nicole (as you already know) loves to bake.  Bakes vegan.  And loves music.  What's the best way to combine these two?  Interview musicians at bakeries while eating their yumminess of course!  Most recently, Nicole interviewed Alyson Greenfield at Sugar Sweet Sunshine in the city.  Everyone should read it- you find out about awesome musicians as well as what bakeries to hit up when you come visit me in the city :o)

Anyways, if I talked to you but forgot to mention you (I know there were others who's cards I didn't get) let me know and I'll add your links too!  There's a full listing of everyone who went here in case you'd like to see it for some reason.

Ok I'll throw in some knitting here since, afterall, this is a knitting blog:

Here's the hat I made over and after spring break.  It's a pattern by Ysolda Teague which luckily for me was written in multiple sizes since I changed the yarn to a sock yarn instead of something fuzzy.  I wanted a lacy spring beret.  Details will follow another time but for now here's a glimpse:

It is very difficult to get a picture of a hat while wearing it.  Bathroom mirror will have to do for now.

This would be that had that Obama-Condom-Guy thought he'd try to steal.  Or trade me a Sarah Palin condom for.  Um, no.

Check back Monday for some more Brooklyn love!

Spring Break, Short Updates and a Contest Winner

Back from vacation, taxes done, (almost) all caught up on school work!  I still have lots to do but I wanted to give you all an update and announce the contest winner.

Vacation was awesome.  We got to visit my mom, my cousins and my aunt and uncle.  We went to a Met's Spring Training game (shocker:  they lost), the adorable Brevard Zoo, Disney World, and the beaches.  It was great to see family and enjoy the wonderful warm weather for a change.

Here's some pictures from the trip:

Birthday Roses ♥
Mets before losing
Anteater!  I never knew how ...interesting... they look in real life!
Beautiful bird who became The Boy's best friend for a bit
Us ♥
The gators were HUGE! And looked fake but they'd move every now and then
On our way to Disney...probably before getting lost twice.  Never follow a GPS to Disney.  Never
This is how I amuse myself waiting to get to the parking tolls.
In Mickey's house...loved the mirrors!
The Haunted Mansion
The only characters we saw that weren't in a parade or you had to wait in line at their homes to see.  Seriously now?  Where were they all hiding??
Cinderella's castle!!
Amusing myself waiting in line for rides.  This is why the battery ran out so quick.  But definitely one of the best pictures of us I got.
Mickey and Minnie rose bushes in front of the castle
At the "photo op" station haha
I love the colored lights on the castle at night
Except it gets to look a little creepy in some colors

Also, I got enough gift cards for my birthday to finally get a new camera!  Isn't she beautiful?  And blue of course :o)

Now that I've got a camera, I can take awesome pictures like these:

Yes, these are just a few of the crazy things we do at Starbucks.  Surprisingly, they have yet to kick us out.

Now that I've tortured you long enough, here's what you're all really waiting for...

The winner of the Birthday Contests iiiiissssss:

***Dianna***
aka KnitaSaur

Congrats Dianna!  Dianna is the winner of a skein of loooovely Malabrigo Lace from Flocks of Yarn, along with some other little goodies.  Dianna- Please let me know which color skein you'd like (Bobby Blue or Paris Night) as well as your snail mail address so I can send your package!!

Check back tomorrow for info about last night's Brooklyn Blogger Meetup!

Somewhere in this mess

Just wanted to let you all know I'm still here!  The winner of the contest will be announced shortly...gotta assign each entry a number and hit up random.org.  Didn't realize how much work it is to organize entries when they're coming at me from all angles (note to self:  next time maybe not so many ways to enter...OY!).  Since coming back, I've actually been subbing, writing papers, studying for tests, and still need to apply for FASFA, summer financial aid and do my taxes.  Bahhhhh!  So crazy right now.  But I did lose 6.6 pounds in the 2 weeks I hadn't been to Weight Watchers during vacation!  Disney was lots of walking :o) Pictures soon I promise!
