Well, technically 2 but we didn't really <i>announce</i> it ahead of time and I never actually cast on the second one. But I did get started on my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/crookedknits/all-the-shades-of-truth" target="_blank">All the Shades of Truth</a> scarf!<br />
<br />
Here's what I'm using for the project:<br />

<br />
I'm using my <a href="http://villageknitter.com/products-3/#category=circular-needles" target="_blank">Chiaogoo US 6</a> needles for this project to get gauge. Typically, being a loose knitter, I have to go down at least one size needle. But I actually had to go <i>up</i> a needle size to get gauge. And, yes, I did gauge for this project. Mine is coming out a little denser feeling than another KAL participant who is using the TML it calls for, but I'm good with what I've got so far :o)<br />
<br />
I actually accomplished this <b>entirely</b> from stash! Shocking, I know! The Ink Shibui came from a frogged pair of knee socks from about 3 years ago (1 UFO taken care of so far). The Paper madTOSH is leftovers from a Christmas present (and therefore not counting in using up 14 skeins of sock yarn stash- that has to be 100g skeins, but I am counting using up both those Shibui colors). Yay for working towards <a href="http://crookedknits.blogspot.com/p/2014-goals.html" target="_blank">my 2014 goals!</a><br />

Honestly, not likely. I've never been one for making New Year's Resolutions, but I do like the idea of setting smaller, achievable goals to work on throughout the year. And of course, I start with my knitting goals each year.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I definitely set more goals than I can achieve, but it's good to constantly have something to strive for. Each time I've done this though, I tend to not follow up on it. Here's to <u>hoping</u> that changes this year!</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
This year's goals:</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
1. 14 hexipuff flowers (7 puffs in each)<br />
2. Use 14 skeins of sock yarn from prior stash<br />
3. 14 washcloths (emergency gifts to have on hand! Or to use for myself)<br />
4. 14 socks- finish or new<br />
5. 14 UFOs- finish or frog<br />
6. 14 charity projects<br />
7. 14 queue items<br />
8. 6 skeins of handspun spun (14 is way out of my league for this one)<br />
9. 6 designs- develop, publish, or update<br />
10. Organize stash and projects<br />
11. Organize stash, projects, and queue on Ravelry<br />
12. Photograph everything!</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I wanted to have some kind of sweater goal in there too, but didn't come up with any actual goals for that. Have any ideas for me? Or have a fun fiber goal you want to share? I'm down for adding more!</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>

<br />
I finally finished my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/crookedknits/celestarium" target="_blank">Celestarium</a> this past week. It has been in and out of my focus for a while now. Cast on months ago, it puttered out for a while due to its ever increasing size. Until I bought a dress to wear to my cousin's wedding and decided this shawl would be perfect to wear with it. And then it was too cold to wear that dress to the wedding. So it sat again, part way through the bind off.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcSV9Kpo1U4jYBqczOcDvfVbyjmosTbqkHgp6I3rnRxJjW7DxjLi-4-KXLo3m-XUa7MW6vdGGhuuoSZqwllnaKxF2krz7Uzx02Mb6gdCtf2ZxYD577whZtI3S7ZEoYs4jahmtVHF_RMa8/s1600/2013.06.16-+Celestarium+Blocking-+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcSV9Kpo1U4jYBqczOcDvfVbyjmosTbqkHgp6I3rnRxJjW7DxjLi-4-KXLo3m-XUa7MW6vdGGhuuoSZqwllnaKxF2krz7Uzx02Mb6gdCtf2ZxYD577whZtI3S7ZEoYs4jahmtVHF_RMa8/s320/2013.06.16-+Celestarium+Blocking-+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Then the owner of <a href="http://www.doneroving.com/" target="_blank">Done Roving</a> heard about the shawl, mentioned her <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/done-roving-frolicking-feet/stashes?status=&cf=%3F&photoless=0&search=starry+starry+night" target="_blank">Starry Starry Night</a> colorway and discovered I was knitting mine in that very yarn. And she wanted to display it at her <a href="http://www.tnna.org/" target="_blank">TNNA</a> booth. Back to binding off I went.<br />

<br />
Finally bound off, this <i>large</i> baby needed an extra special blocking. Except the weather was bad. Or I didn't have time on a gorgeous day. Or I was just too lazy to do it. And then it was forgotten, burried under other project bags. Until this past weekend. When I realized I had to have it done by Tuesday to head to TNNA with the bosses.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwUFI7G0lAAolvQQ8Zgx6EGdrq3N_S3QRcg8Ua-I79z0MAOMVhZX2LG1CeM0BWOJkKiKzDgTtlEkiaiNsWCoihq0EdjpavjL9ODALtYXKlKlREN8jv7myeisSgjIpsxGAAzEKoqKZIIuE/s1600/2013.06.16-+Celestarium+Blocking-+006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwUFI7G0lAAolvQQ8Zgx6EGdrq3N_S3QRcg8Ua-I79z0MAOMVhZX2LG1CeM0BWOJkKiKzDgTtlEkiaiNsWCoihq0EdjpavjL9ODALtYXKlKlREN8jv7myeisSgjIpsxGAAzEKoqKZIIuE/s320/2013.06.16-+Celestarium+Blocking-+006.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I frantically started setting up my blocking boards outside while the shawl soaked. And just as I was draining it out, the drizzling started. I dragged my foam blocks inside and set about pinning.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizunxj1abwGjlAO2TZgHl82v-US-yS94IQhxT6JL0MXCVpR8sAJdPKLdjIexBH25NoaOYDrZbR67uB-Oq25tHuYeJu8znrV1RfqoCgqLCXWiSYrTlVJ7Mxxy_ODMotN6I6IwkEM_ibgec/s1600/2013.06.16-+Celestarium+Blocking-+009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizunxj1abwGjlAO2TZgHl82v-US-yS94IQhxT6JL0MXCVpR8sAJdPKLdjIexBH25NoaOYDrZbR67uB-Oq25tHuYeJu8znrV1RfqoCgqLCXWiSYrTlVJ7Mxxy_ODMotN6I6IwkEM_ibgec/s320/2013.06.16-+Celestarium+Blocking-+009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Not gonna lie, it looked pretty shitty. So out came the blocking wires. Into every one of the 500+ stitches they were threaded and pinned. Did I mention over 500 stitches?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip3cQWfR6JXRidmORFXkXniH-BKFAB_-fnfPQhFhiycwcv3k8F2tIWWS7mvhMTHr0oWVC6W1EJB9nruziV7FLGjZ_c8V188geGUDPduyWuR6Z8BymNN-fO3DXuCNANG8G-GF-NLYJv9zQ/s1600/2013.06.16-+Celestarium+Blocking-+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip3cQWfR6JXRidmORFXkXniH-BKFAB_-fnfPQhFhiycwcv3k8F2tIWWS7mvhMTHr0oWVC6W1EJB9nruziV7FLGjZ_c8V188geGUDPduyWuR6Z8BymNN-fO3DXuCNANG8G-GF-NLYJv9zQ/s320/2013.06.16-+Celestarium+Blocking-+007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Before I even started the shawl, I decided I did not like the applied garter edging. It was just too blah for my taste. After sampling a couple stitch patterns, a ruffled edge was suggested. And I did it, adding beads in the bind offs. That made 1700+ stitches. Yes, I understand I'm a little crazy.<br />

This month's <a href="http://lispinning.com/" target="_blank">SSGLI </a>meeting was all about SHEEP! While we often focus on wool and fleeces today there were actual live sheep at the barn :o)<br />

As you can see, everyone enjoyed feeling these 3 month old boys. Lisa of <a href="http://bayhavenshorttails.com/" target="_blank">Bay Haven Short Tails</a> brought 2 of her 4 little men to visit with us. These 2 were the ones she had to bottle feed. The other two stayed home with their mommy (Hazel, Lisa's son's sheep that he WON at MS&W last year, and Hercules, the ram she brought home to, well, make more sheep with).<br />

These boys just love attention. Granted, they did get a little distracted by things they could chew on. But really they loooooved being petted. And we willingly obliged them!<br />

<br />
Here's what I learned tonight about raising sheep:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>They're cheaper to buy than a dog.</li>
<li>You don't need allll that much room for them.</li>
<li>They're the friendliest little guys ever and make awesome pets.</li>
</ol>
<div>
Even better- they talk to you:</div>

It was settled that I would teach entrelac. Originally it was going to be March but after scrapping a bunch of ideas for February, we moved it up. We wanted something Valentine's themed, so after a couple tries. I made these little cuties.<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHEevEH7nAmdpWkVFM1Gv4rxNrSWPiaEbhcu8akff03AEePEgmTHdO0ck2zzoX9Bv7GKk_zKN8QqpIDnLYA_myOY_WcXbn8cwsrOK15Nza7pRdGjhxHbNQ0_D7gLp4eq6mEvD5j82yZCI/s1600/2013.02.05-+Mock-trelac+Heart+Regular+and+Mini+-+Edited.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHEevEH7nAmdpWkVFM1Gv4rxNrSWPiaEbhcu8akff03AEePEgmTHdO0ck2zzoX9Bv7GKk_zKN8QqpIDnLYA_myOY_WcXbn8cwsrOK15Nza7pRdGjhxHbNQ0_D7gLp4eq6mEvD5j82yZCI/s400/2013.02.05-+Mock-trelac+Heart+Regular+and+Mini+-+Edited.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's a great into to entrelac recipe- using any weight yarn and any needle size. There are no pesky end triangles so that the knitter can get the hang of the idea behind entrelac. It's small enough that if you decide you hate knitting entrelac, you can still have a finished project without having to do something huge. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm planning on incorporating this pattern into a themed series down the road, but if you want to knit it with us for Valentine's Day come to the meeting this weekend! We'll be at the Brooklyn Central Library in the Trustees Room on Sunday, February 10 at 1:30 (library doors open at 1:00). If you're commuting in, the library is a 20 minute walk from the Atlantic Terminal LIRR stop or accessible by several subway lines (some come closer than others). Or if you actually care to drive through Manhattan, it's just down the road from the Manhattan Bridge.</div>

Wrap-Up, Part the Third- The Projects and the HaulNow I <i>know</i> this is what you've all been waiting for. Before I show you the goodies, though, here's a look at what I was knitting throughout the weekend. That's what it's really about afterall.<br />
<br />
First, I finished knitting up my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/crookedknits/bff-cowl" target="_blank">BFF Cowl</a> link during my Thursday train ride. After a couple snags, it was seamed up with the other link. Which was perfect to wear to the <a href="http://subway-knits.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Subway Knits</a> Meetup on Saturday. Where I saw my two swap partners.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
My link was knit out of <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/crookedknits/stash/taiyo" target="_blank">Noro Taiyo</a>. It's a cotton yarn I actually like, probably because it's blended with silk, wool and nylon.<br />
<br />
Throughout the weekend, I worked on my Hexipuffaday challenge. I finished 4 (maybe more) during train rides and downtime standing around during my shifts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So far I have 24 done (and number 25 is on the needles now) for January.<br />
<br />

<br />
My last project for the weekend was a <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/crookedknits/pogona" target="_blank">Pogona</a>, cast on specifically for it's easy and mindless miles of stockinette and reverse stockinette. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I'm using my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/crookedknits/stash/bugga" target="_blank">Sanguine Gryphon Bugga!</a> leftover from my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/crookedknits/tempest" target="_blank">Tempest Cardi</a>. Speaking of, I can't find this cardigan and have no photo on my project page for it. Which means it's probably lost on the floor of my closet somewhere. Ugh<br />
<br />
Now, for what you really wanted to see: the stash acquisitions! <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fiber Content: merino, bamboo, tussah silk, angelina</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I can't wait to spin this fiber! I've heard such great things about Loop and want to start now. But too many other things are waiting to be finished on Cocinella first. Like the stuff I bought at VKLive last year...<br />
<br />
But that didn't stop me from buying more fiber! I have to support <a href="http://lilivestockco.com/" target="_blank">LI Livestock Co.</a> every time I see them! I love that my local fiber source is growing. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaS9m_U3ezvdTMUsghs58xN8G30z9u-HqVEfBVRVJrmrQNl8dngEKxeKfPNeCoyuRtOfnf-OQcm-GJKf_L7Yi5zm4wldVzO4WoJcc_53P1Pmxt-bJqMW6EFzRdNPX4_xocjg4Ob-ukwEs/s1600/2013.01.21-+VKLive+Stash-+003-+LI+Livestock+Roving.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaS9m_U3ezvdTMUsghs58xN8G30z9u-HqVEfBVRVJrmrQNl8dngEKxeKfPNeCoyuRtOfnf-OQcm-GJKf_L7Yi5zm4wldVzO4WoJcc_53P1Pmxt-bJqMW6EFzRdNPX4_xocjg4Ob-ukwEs/s320/2013.01.21-+VKLive+Stash-+003-+LI+Livestock+Roving.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This roving is 95% llama with 5% Gold Bamboo and comes from the llamas Patches and Butterscotch. I love this method of naming :o)<br />
<br />
Next acquisition was a set of needles from <a href="http://indianlakeartisans.com/" target="_blank">Indian Lake Artisans</a>. These guys vended Vogue last year, but only had straight needles. They came to the shop to show their wares but we don't have a market for straight needles. I heard from <a href="https://twitter.com/MooseManor" target="_blank">MooseManor</a> that they were at Rhinebeck and had finally made some circulars.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And, even better, they have the twisty cables. Meaning the needle swivels around the cable, helping to prevent cable kinks. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZT2HGdDrXhaBuDHQ9tKWdt5bwkTfjLay6UQDJv3d-jsvrR3FQDwHSXR60dHFHRUSkZLYPSUbAlYETkGmof-EDotgiEc-8cjzjpRxYg1r3y5EgiHvH9jsHTv-43Pu1L_xtwEbl4umNcd0/s1600/2013.01.21-+VKLive+Stash-+009-+Indian+Lake+Artisans+Needles.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZT2HGdDrXhaBuDHQ9tKWdt5bwkTfjLay6UQDJv3d-jsvrR3FQDwHSXR60dHFHRUSkZLYPSUbAlYETkGmof-EDotgiEc-8cjzjpRxYg1r3y5EgiHvH9jsHTv-43Pu1L_xtwEbl4umNcd0/s320/2013.01.21-+VKLive+Stash-+009-+Indian+Lake+Artisans+Needles.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

They even have the size burned/stamped (?) into them. <br />
<br />

<br />
Once I use these, I'll do a review. Especially since I also just bought the ChiaoGoo interchangeables this week too.<br />

</tbody></table>
So far, these ones have a leg up on the ChiaoGoos solely because they are 100% American made.<br />
<br />
Now, on to the yarn purchases! I really didn't want to buy yarn since I have so much already, work at a yarn shop, and still haven't knit everything I bought at Vogue last year :o/<br />
<br />
So my only purchases were super special. Well, mostly.<br />
<br />
First up was my purchase from <a href="http://www.habutextiles.com/" target="_blank">Habu Textiles</a>. I bought 3 cones of a raw silk wrapped stainless steel in a slate blue-gray color.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqa8YdW6C_dEl6FnXe9mOHSU4ELK4NFN1p-URcxZbsn2PJItftftwn1dH5r6V8Nr0ZkBPDvl5bwUNp8aumdkL4vzUuhGiPbfMkRWvfAom7NS3RZYUTqfwUHdVf0CQB78p66H3y4azzQc8/s1600/2013.01.21-+VKLive+Stash-+004-+Habu+Textiles+Silk+Stainless+Wool.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqa8YdW6C_dEl6FnXe9mOHSU4ELK4NFN1p-URcxZbsn2PJItftftwn1dH5r6V8Nr0ZkBPDvl5bwUNp8aumdkL4vzUuhGiPbfMkRWvfAom7NS3RZYUTqfwUHdVf0CQB78p66H3y4azzQc8/s320/2013.01.21-+VKLive+Stash-+004-+Habu+Textiles+Silk+Stainless+Wool.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I've always wanted to try a steel wool style of yarn. And since I know I won't go out of my way to purchase it, I took my opportunity this weekend. Each cone has 575 yards so I have plenty to play with, but I have a sweater idea brewing around my mind for it. Just have to find the perfect companion yarn. <br />
<br />
Next purchase was from <a href="http://thepluckyknitter.com/" target="_blank">The Plucky Knitter</a>. I don't think I've ever heard of these ladies before, but their colors were amazing! So I knew I had to try some out.<br />

I will most likely do something colorwork with these two. Not sure what yet though. I did scour Ravelry Saturday night when I should have been sleeping looking for ideas. Nothing perfect yet. I'm open to suggestions though!<br />
<br />
My last purchase of the weekend was Sunday morning at <a href="http://www.dragonflyfibers.com/" target="_blank">Dragonfly Fibers</a>. I waited to purchase until Sunday because I knew I was going to be dragging <a href="http://twitter.com/purlingswine" target="_blank">purlingswine </a>there to take a look.<br />

I really wanted a variegated color, but I have so many sock patterns that need to be done in a solid that I settled on the bright sea color of Mermaid. <br />

I can't wait to play with all my knew fibery fun stuff. So, what did you pick up at the Marketplace??<br />

Wrap-Up, Part the SecondI got up semi early Saturday with the intentions of heading in for some shopping before my commitments for the day but no luck. I did get up a bit early but vegged around for quite a while before heading to the train. <br />
<br />
Once I got to the hotel, I wandered the market for 10 minutes but headed up to the Ysolda lecture very early (so early, I was the first one there). Since this was my only scheduled event, I wanted to make sure I had a great seat. <br />
<br />
The lecture started a little rough. But after the first couple minutes, Ysolda was on point and did a great jobs, despite some technical and scheduling difficulties. She had a great "make it work" moment with the help of an attendee with a smartphone. The lighting was pretty bad for the webcam she was using to project images of swatches on the screen, but the other student used the flashlight app on her phone as a spotlight. Gotta love us knitters :o)<br />
<br />
Overheard at #vklive: "Why isn't technology instant? We're in a <a href="https://www.google.com/search?num=10&hl=en&site=&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1024&bih=475&q=marriott+marquis+elevator&oq=marriott+marquis+elevator&gs_l=img.3..0i24.653.4805.0.5278.25.14.0.9.9.1.406.1742.6j7j4-1.14.0.cpsugrpqhmoffline..0.0...1ac.1.fXmTGlOY5gk" target="_blank">spaceship</a>. It should be instant." -Ysolda.<br />
<br />
After the lecture, I went and did the majority of my shopping for the weekend (in about a half hour). You'll see all my purchases in tomorrow's post though :o)<br />
<br />
Next I went over to the Subway Knits meetup and met so many listeners! I saw <a href="https://twitter.com/venusfueri" target="_blank">venusfueri</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/knityorkcity" target="_blank">knityorkcity</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/kreyoli" target="_blank">kreyoli </a>and <a href="https://twitter.com/Stitchmistress" target="_blank">stitchmistress</a>. In the Subway Knits BFF Cowl Swap, I sent the link I knit to <a href="https://twitter.com/kreyoli" target="_blank">kreyoli</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/venusfueri" target="_blank">venusfueri</a> sent hers to me. And I'm wearing mine here :o)<br />
<br />
I took a quick trip through the market again before heading to my next shift- Marketplace Doors. I felt icky through this shift- most likely dehydrated. But it wasn't terrible. I got to see lots of people I knew walking in and out and checked out everyone's handknits and purchases. This was my not-so-humble encounter with a designer who thought dropping her name let he do what she wanted and be pushy. Ugh. Not buying her books anytime soon. Seriously people, when you go to these events, wear your badges and don't complain about showing them, wristbands, or tickets. And no, you can't get in without them. Most popular questions we got: 1- What floor am I on?, and 2- Where's the bathroom? (they were right behind me). After the shift there was one more quick walk through of the Market and then I headed home. I was not feeling up to meeting up with anyone and really just wanted my bed.<br />
<br />
Sunday morning I got up at the ass crack of dawn because <i>someone,</i> ahem <a href="https://twitter.com/purlingswine" target="_blank">purlingswine</a>, wanted to get on the 7:55 train. But once coffee was in me I was ok. We met up with <a href="https://twitter.com/january_one" target="_blank">january_one</a> and headed to the hotel. <a href="https://twitter.com/purlingswine" target="_blank">purlingswine</a> wasted no time in making fun of my tabbed Guide book. But it was necessary for my shift at the Marketplace Doors!<br />
<br />

<br />
When the Marketplace opened, I immediately dragged <a href="https://twitter.com/purlingswine" target="_blank">purlingswine</a> to <a href="http://www.dragonflyfibers.com/" target="_blank">Dragonfly Fibers</a>. I loved the yarn colors so much Saturday that I wanted to try my best to get them into <a href="http://villageknitter.com/" target="_blank">The Village Knitter</a>. Ann liked it too so we brought some home to show at the shop. My fingers are crossed.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://twitter.com/january_one" target="_blank">january_one</a> was beyond ready to head to <a href="http://thepluckyknitter.com/" target="_blank">The Plucky Knitter</a> and we ran into <a href="http://babycocktails.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Thea Coleman of Baby Cocktails</a> over there. She was a riot and had us almost crying from laughing at her stories. We even had some photobombing going on. And this:<br />

My last shift of the weekend was what I do on a regular basis: winding yarn at the Yarn Tasting. So many friends from <a href="http://villageknitter.com/" target="_blank">the shop</a> came by and heckled me. Lucky I love them.<br />
<br />
I had yet another fantastic weekend volunteering for Vogue. It's always lots of fun meeting all the other volunteers and just getting to hang out everywhere. Beth and Erin did a great job and were so awesome to work with. I was absolutely <i>flabbergasted</i> that Beth knew me by face and name, either remembering from last year or just really good at putting names and faces together. Either way, it was nice to work with them. I didn't interact with Gabby and Carol much, but I saw them working their butts off <i>constantly</i> throughout the weekend. I'm ready for next year's event! So, when can I fill out the volunteer application?crookedknitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09225182364421015474noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272919122754993682.post-39672723659630535502013-01-21T11:11:00.002-05:002013-01-21T11:11:27.270-05:00VOGUEknitting LIVE! Wrap-Up, Part the First<div dir="ltr">
The whirlwind of a weekend is finally over! Once again, I had a ton of fun. Great people, great yarn and so far the best weather yet! </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Because I was volunteering most of the weekend, there wasn't much time or opportunity for me to take photos. But if you want to see some, head over to the <a href="http://subway-knits.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Subway Knits Podcast website</a>. </div>
<div dir="ltr">

<div dir="ltr">
Thursday I left subbing an eensy bit earlier to make my train for the volunteer meeting. I was still late to the meeting, but I have to be very thankful that <a href="https://twitter.com/Huntress999" target="_blank">Huntress999</a> was already in the meeting and gave me a heads up about the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/10/magazine/10section3b.t-1.html?_r=0">elevators</a>. Good thing because I would have been even more late trying to figure them out on my own. The meeting was quick and then we had a brief tour of where we'll be working. None of this sunk in for me and it took me a while to figure out where I was half the time.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Friday I <i>planned</i> to get into the city early but as usual I was running late. Once I got to the Marriott I checked in for my first shift- very easily redirecting people whose class had been relocated. It was a short shift so after I sat and knit with <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/rachmouse" target="_blank">rachmouse</a> for a while. My second shift of the day was helping out at the Cocktail Reception. </div>

We helped set up the area and then I stood with <a href="https://twitter.com/pepperknit" target="_blank">pepperknit</a> taking tickets at the door. This was fun because I got to see all these awesome handknits as well as lots of designers, many pointed out to me by <a href="https://twitter.com/pepperknit" target="_blank">pepperknit</a>. I didn't know what many of these designers looked like beforehand. Here's some of the people I saw:</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/NickyEpstein" target="_blank">Nicky Epstein</a>- sweet as always<br /><a href="https://twitter.com/JoshBennettNYC" target="_blank">Josh Bennett</a> and <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/bdnico" target="_blank">Brooke Nico</a> came up together. All, no.<br /><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/ysolda" target="_blank">Ysolda</a>- looked super cute<br />
Lily Chin-words can never explain this one. Completely ignoring the fact that her hand knit dress reminded me of a <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=flamenco&hl=en&tbo=d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=WJ38UMOULof-0gGm-4CABw&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&biw=600&bih=904">flamenco</a> dancer, all she wanted to do was show off her <a href="https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbo=d&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=teapot+purse&oq=teapot+purse&gs_l=img.3..0i24l2.71173.79493.0.82404.9.6.0.0.0.1.268.762.0j2j2.4.0.cpsugrpqhmoffline..0.0...1ac.1j4.Mrxal2IJYWM&biw=600&bih=904&sei=sZ38UOjfGIfy0gGyyoCgBA#biv=i|0;d|1mlvi05M0IomJM:">teapot</a> purse. 15 minutes before this, we could see her on the floor below checking into the hotel...in a completely different outfit. This woman is a wonder!<br />
Debbie Bliss- I asked her for a ticket before looking up and realizing who it was. Her daughter was very sweet as well.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br />
I'm sure more came through but these were the ones who stood out for me. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
And yes, I didn't know who <a href="http://www.karenallen-fiberarts.com/welcome.php" target="_blank">Karen Allen</a> was. I have never seen any of her movies. I know, I suck. I've heard it all weekend. If someone wants to set up an intervention, I won't fight it.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br />
After I finished my shift, I was left with about a half hour to shop. A couple of us meet up and started wandering the marketplace. Until I heard that <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/loop" target="_blank">Loop</a> only had a small and limited number of her fiber bumps. I've only heard amazing things about them so I had to make a beeline and pick one up. And <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/loop" target="_blank">Steph </a>was super sweet to talk to us. But of course, because she has the best name ever.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
We didn't have much time left after so we gathered our group and headed out for dinner. After walking in many circles trying to find a pub with enough space for our group, <a href="https://twitter.com/kreyoli" target="_blank">kreyoli</a>, <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/rachmouse" target="_blank">rachmouse</a>, <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/Huntress999" target="_blank">Huntress999</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/daisydeadpetal" target="_blank">daisydeadpetal</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/MooseManor" target="_blank">MooseManor</a> and others whose Ravelry/Twitter names I don't know (share with me if you want!) settled on <a href="http://www.connollyspubandrestaurant.com/" target="_blank">Connolly's</a>. Good food and fun. Our waiter, Middle-Name-Brendan, tried to convince us all to knit him a hat. Fat chance!</div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;">So now I've ben experiencing those old annoyances of using dpns: losing or dropping the fifth needle, stitches falling off the ends of needles, and accidentally pulling a needle right out of a side of my square. Nothing completely life shattering, but seriously annoying. So I had an excuse to buy yet another cute accessory.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;"><br /></span>

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;">These are actually working pretty well. That is a four letter word for me.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;">Back in the winter of 2007, I was using dpns to make some fingerless gloves with yarn left over from a poncho. I loved this yarn. It was beautiful and soft. </span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;">The mitts were coming out great. Except the part where the needles met. That's when I learned about ladders (see <a href="http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer03/FEATtheresa.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://techknitting.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-to-avoid-ladders-on-dpns-double.html" target="_blank">here</a>). I had bad ladders. All thanks to those stupid dpns. I mean, there was no way it was my fault that these gaps were forming all down the sides of my mitts. It had to be those needles.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;">That was when I swore to never use dpns again. Except for in cases of <a href="http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/i-cord-english" target="_blank">i-cord</a> of course. But other than that, NO MORE dpns.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;">So really, looking back, it really probably was me. Than was back when I was still twisting my stitches when I knit. And I didn't have that much experience using dpns. And the yarn was probably a little too small for knitting on size 7 needles.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;">Now I've knit counterpane squares before. You may remember me starting <a href="http://crookedknits.blogspot.com/2010/02/fo-err-sorta.html" target="_blank">these</a> to make a scarf. Yeah, it's still not finished. But I do know and have worked the technique before. With those squares, I was working them magic loop with no problems. But knitting up the first sample square for the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/relief-counterpane-blanket" target="_blank">Relief Counterpane Blanket</a> was less than comfortable. As soon as I went to <a href="http://villageknitter.com/" target="_blank">The Village Knitter</a> again, I bought dpns for the beginning of the squares.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;">And I love it! Trust me, I'm the last person who thought that would happen, but it did. Which is crazy because I have been thinking for a few weeks that I should try knitting socks on dpns, even if just once. To say I could and have of course.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;">It is definitely much easier to get the squares started on the dpns for my hands. Being used to loooong circulars for magic loop, I have dropped my needle here or there but, hey, it happens.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Droid Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.983333587646484px;">My mind is spinning for other uses for dpns now.</span>crookedknitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09225182364421015474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272919122754993682.post-13485184773581051452012-11-12T23:50:00.001-05:002012-11-12T23:50:35.906-05:00Whoa.Our power came back on last Tuesday evening- exactly 8 days without power. Ever since then, things have been a little hectic, but now they're getting back to normal. I was even able to get some sewing done today- the first time in weeks! Guess I won't be getting that Halloween project bag done for, um, Halloween. <br />
<br />
But having power means I can finally post some pictures! <br />

<span id="goog_1225369587"></span><span id="goog_1225369588"></span>I'm still so thankful that we ONLY lost power. My heart goes out to those whose homes have been damaged or destroyed in the storm. But at the same time, people are coming together to help each other. And right now, that's most important.crookedknitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09225182364421015474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272919122754993682.post-9774909550602342432012-11-06T22:25:00.000-05:002012-11-07T17:05:21.118-05:00Just a Couple ThingsJust a real quick post today. Power is back on at home! But there are still plenty without! Including on my block. The homes near where the tree fell on the pole are still out, as well as a couple others further down the road and the stop light at the end of our street.<br />
<br />
Here's a bunch of places you can go to help out those affected by the storm:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/JanElinRN" target="_blank">Jan</a> and <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/terry427" target="_blank">Terry</a> created this group: <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/groups/squares-for-comfort" target="_blank">Squares for Comfort</a>. They're customers at the <a href="http://villageknitter.com/" target="_blank">shop</a> and wanted to expand on the square idea in a way to help others directly. So if you knit some <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/relief-counterpane-blanket" target="_blank">Relief Counterpane Squares</a> and don't like seaming, you can mail them to these ladies! They will assemble blankets and distribute them locally.<br />
<br />
Next is another customer at the shop: <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/Chaintwomag" target="_blank">Suzy</a>. She's got a list of patterns and websites contributing funds to Sandy relief over at <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/groups/hurricane-sandy-fundraiser-group" target="_blank">Hurricane Sandy Fundraiser Group</a>. There's also lists of donation items needed.<br />
<br />
Last for today is probably the fastest and easiest for everyone. <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/venusfueri" target="_blank">Maria</a> from <a href="http://subway-knits.blogspot.com/2012/10/hurrication-day-2-fundraiser-and-update.html" target="_blank">Subway Knits Podcast</a> is running what in the past has been a very successful fundraising campaign. All you have to do is donate minimum $5 to a charity and forward the receipt to her. You then have to post in the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/subway-knits-podcast/2344178/1-25#7" target="_blank">thread</a> on Ravelry for a chance to win a <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/subway-knits-podcast/2344163/1-25#8" target="_blank">donation incentive</a>. And there certainly are a lot of prizes!<br />
<br />
ETA 11/7/2012:<br />
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/jpeled" target="_blank">Jessica</a> of the <a href="http://knittingbrooklyn.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Knitting Brooklyn</a> is hosting a KAL in conjunction with Squares for Comfort. It will be running until 12/31 and there are <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/knitting-brooklyn/2354670/1-25#1" target="_blank">PRIZES</a>!crookedknitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09225182364421015474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3272919122754993682.post-91263747160012380372012-11-05T16:46:00.004-05:002012-11-05T16:52:00.258-05:00moochThere are many reasons to love Starbucks. Today, I love them for their heat, electricity, and wifi. And that I can walk there. Because if you haven't heard, gas lines around here are INSANE. I've heard of people waiting 8 plus hours. Not for me yet. I have no where that important to be yet. I'm really hoping power comes back asap since we're now expecting yet another storm this week. oy<br />
<br />
In better news, word is spreading about the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/relief-counterpane-blanket" target="_blank">Relief Counterpane Blanket</a>. So far, 40 copies sold. That's $200 before whatever Paypal charges. I finished two squares and they're at home blocking. or possibly freezing. But they'll block eventually.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-gUsR-lvXG0i51zXYyniwQIEMgSDCFNxdzjkvNKuBJn782jUMJyDKcoR48Ci9gxkQGI-6w_v1XJt9RyIsWaNt-ImGkRZxZA9ImqpHaHBTa3LoOLPnZbY5Uz2atG_SPhPQ58EQHy0cfH8/s1600/mms_picture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-gUsR-lvXG0i51zXYyniwQIEMgSDCFNxdzjkvNKuBJn782jUMJyDKcoR48Ci9gxkQGI-6w_v1XJt9RyIsWaNt-ImGkRZxZA9ImqpHaHBTa3LoOLPnZbY5Uz2atG_SPhPQ58EQHy0cfH8/s400/mms_picture.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I changed it up a bit and added a contrasting color border. And if you didn't see the <a href="https://mobile.twitter.com/crookedknits/status/265478355757977600" target="_blank">tweet</a>, I made a mistake. While knitting my own pattern. Proof to be careful when knitting late at night and early in the morning. Whoops. But I don't think it's noticeable. I also have ripped back about half of my original square so that I could make it match the actual pattern (I modified the pattern post knitting and pre publishing) and so I can give it a matching border. I can't wait to get it done and seamed up. The pattern and Ravelry page need some <i>good, proper</i> photos.<br />
<br />

Though I'm hoping that will change soon. A pair of guys came to fix the gas at the yarn shop today. One had a hole in his pocket and he was looking at our notions display for a needle and thread. I told him we wouldn't have anything appropriate there, but that we had an emergency sewing kit in the bathroom. They went to get everything set and came back into the shop afterwards. So picture it: He's standing there pulling on the pocket and I'm leaning over doing the worst sewing job ever just to get the pocket lining reattached to the jeans (my boss at the costume shop would have been so embarrassed!). The conversation went like this:<br />
Gas Man: "How are things by your house?"<br />
Me: "We have no power, but gas runs the hot water, stove and oven, and we have a wood stove for heat."<br />
Gas Man: "Where do you live?"<br />
Me: I tell him the name of my town and describe where my neighborhood is.<br />
Gas Man: Blank stare.<br />
Me: "Where are you from>"<br />
Gas Man: "Syracuse."<br />
Me: "I have family in Tully!" (a small town 20 minutes or so south of Syracuse)<br />
Gas Man: "What's the name of your street?"<br />Me: I tell him.<br />
Gas Man: "Well when I see the power guys I'll send them that way and make sure they get you fixed."<br />
<br />
Cross your fingers for me...<br />
<br />
2- Grandma is finally out of the hospital. I don't know how she weaseled her way into 2 extra nights there. She tried to protest when we were visiting her Friday because she had not lights or heat at home and a doctor aggravatingly told her, "This is a hospital, not a hotel!" But her house got electric back at 4 am and she came home sometime today.<br />
<br />
3- <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/relief-counterpane-blanket" target="_blank">Relief Counterpane Blanket</a> has sold 32 patterns as of my last check. <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=annfalcone&src=typd" target="_blank">And OMG THIS!</a> Fangirl moment :o) It's very handy when your boss tweets your pattern, and <a href="http://www.masondixonknitting.com/" target="_blank">Kay Gardiner</a> just happens to retweet AND buy it. I love it. You guys rock. Keep it going! If you haven't gotten it yet, use that button just down there...<br />

There's plenty of devastation- floods, trees on houses, power lines down, homes just swept away. I was lucky- we lost power but have a gas stove, oven and hot water heater. And hey, I can knit by candlelight :o)<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, not everyone I know was as lucky. Family and friends have homes in varying degrees of being destroyed. My grandmother had heart surgery within days of the storm and has no heat (electricity) to go home to. Every shelter in the area is filled but many are sleeping in homes with no heat, power, gas or even a ground floor in livable conditions. <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Bring in the fundraiser! I've pulled a <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mitered-crosses-blanket--for-japan">Kay</a> and designed a simple square motif pattern to sell to raise money for <a href="http://licares.org/">Long Island Cares</a>, a local food bank working their butts off to provide supplies for those in need in Sandy's aftermath. Special thanks to <a href="http://villageknitter.com/">The Village Knitter in Babylon</a>, NY for providing me the electricity, Internet access, and amazing community it took to make this pattern possible!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipHql34XGuvjAlNB9Y-wBMYj4sbVnFMKhpsxzDxo6HLmO88mLqP7TTd4pMEyj9zq5094wfFfyAkL_0lm06L319S0GYolNMPGT2M3eG0ftzOqqDXS_-TTZGI7aSOZR3XsH6I4kWeLsdJ24/s1600/2012.11.03-+Relief+Counterpane+Blanket+Square-+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipHql34XGuvjAlNB9Y-wBMYj4sbVnFMKhpsxzDxo6HLmO88mLqP7TTd4pMEyj9zq5094wfFfyAkL_0lm06L319S0GYolNMPGT2M3eG0ftzOqqDXS_-TTZGI7aSOZR3XsH6I4kWeLsdJ24/s400/2012.11.03-+Relief+Counterpane+Blanket+Square-+002.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Once you've knit at least 9 squares, they can be sewn together to form a small baby or lap blanket. Add more to make a larger blanket.<br />

<br />
Each square uses approximately 150 yards of worsted weight yarn. Use more than one color to destash some of those leftovers :o)<br />

You may remember a couple years ago that my former co-worker's daughter was born 14 weeks early weighing less than 2 pound. I have been raising money ever since for March of Dime (March for Babies in the US) for her team, Kayleigh's Krew. I'm happy to report that Kayleigh is a very rambunctious almost 3 year old and has been growing into a beautiful little girl.<br />
<br />
If you have anything to give, it would be much appreciated :o). I'm very close to my goal so far and I hope to make it (not counting my own donation) this year and surpass last year's donations!<br />
<br />
The following weekend, I'm also participating in a Knit-A-Thon at <a href="http://villageknitter.com/">Village Knitter</a>. The proceeds from the Knit-A-Thon benefit YAI, local centers that help children and adults with disabilities. You can use <a href="https://secure2.convio.net/yai/site/Donation2?idb=1343014398&1583.donation=form1&df_id=1583&FR_ID=1130&PROXY_ID=16180&PROXY_TYPE=22&JServSessionIdr004=3s5edvjp61.app244a">this link</a> to donate to that cause as well.<br />
<br />
Both causes are so worthwhile! Thanks everyone in advance :o)<br />

But for a good reason: I've (sorta) got a job! A teacher in (my favorite) school had to have surgery at the end of March and the principal called me to be her leave replacement. She was supposed to be out for a month but it continually gets extended. Officially, I'm in the classroom until the end of May, but it's looking like it will be for the rest of the school year. It's so nice to know where I'm going ahead of time and having the same group of kids to work with. But it's also overwhelming! I have so much work to do and am barely planned ahead of time. It's a pain that I can't have the classroom working the way I would (still following the teacher's routines until we know for sure whether she's coming back or not) and things are certainly not organized. But it's a job! The only downside is there's no pay raise- so I'm spending almost every free moment doing work for this class and getting the same pay as regular subbing. I just have to keep telling myself it's a good resume builder.<br />
<br />
Because of this, though, I haven't been knitting much. Well, make that I've been knitting simple stockinette or garter stitch projects. Right now I'm working on a <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/crookedknits/silk-top">Silk Top</a> from Debbie Bliss and a couple simple baby blankets just to pass the time. My brain doesn't have the energy for anything more.<br />
<br />
I also got an awesome tax refund this year, so I finally had enough money to buy a spinning wheel! I bought a Ladybug, which will be here sometime the beginning of June (I hope!). Which is a good thing since I had my drop spindle bag behind my seat at Knit Night and someone stepped on it and broke the dowel. Now, I have the second cheapest drop spindle out there, so I'm not heartbroken. I can easily go to Home Depot and buy a dowel to replace it. Just last weekend I noticed the glue wasn't exactly doing its job anymore and the whorl was sliding around anyway. And I have a spinning wheel on its way :o). BTW, the cheapest spindle has to be the CD spindles you make at home. But mine is just a step above that.<br />
<br />
In other news, I sent and received packages for the Downton Abby Swap hosted by the Subway Knits podcast. Surprisingly, my partner for sending and receiving was <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/amydoth">amydoth</a> both times! I didn't take pictures before sending to Amy, but I took plenty of what I received:<br />

<br />
First, there were a couple random drawings for a pattern. I was drawn one of the time, and we were able to pick a pattern from their shop. It was a hard decision, but I eventually settled on <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fargo">Fargo</a>. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/kategagnonosborn/83694757/fargocloselg_medium.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/kategagnonosborn/83694757/fargocloselg_medium.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Verdana, 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">© Kate Gagnon Osborn + Kelbourne Woolens</span>
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I decided that I'm going to use the color Atoll, but have to special order it since we don't carry <a href="http://thefibreco.com/organik.html">Organik</a> at the <a href="http://villageknitter.com/">shop</a>. I'm probably going to wait on this one for a bit since it's already warming up for spring here in New York. To fit me, I need to order 12 skeins, except you have to order in bags of 10 (meaning I'd need to order 2 bags). Since it's a yarn we don't stock, I'd have to take all of it. So I'm still deciding if I want to make both Fargo and the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rocky-coast-cardigan">Rocky Coast Cardigan</a> out of the same color. I would need 8 skeins for that and it would work out perfectly. But do I want them both in the same color. Decisions, decisions...<br />
<br />
At the end of the KAL, there was a Grand Prize winner and also another winner. They chose from the people who had finished their <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/groove-2">Groove</a> by the end of the KAL. No, I didn't win the Grand Prize (enough <a href="http://thefibreco.com/roadtochinalight.html">Road to China Light</a> to make a sweater pattern, included...so jealous!). I did, though, win a copy of the pattern <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/schoodic-cardigan">Schoodic</a>, new from <a href="http://knitbot.com/">Hannah Fettig</a><br />

It calls for Acadia. I do so love this yarn now! My only gripe is I can't choose a <a href="http://thefibreco.com/acadia.html">color</a>. Any ideas? I really loved knitting this. Acadia is a great yarn, and it softens even more after blocking!<br />

The pattern was, as usual, very well written. And, as usual, I didn't <i>not</i> use as many stitch markers as he calls for. I swear, Stephen West is obsessed with <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/crookedknits?section_id=8008663">stitch markers</a>. I can't claim that to be a bad thing though :o)<br />

Yarn: The Fibre Company <i><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/the-fibre-company-acadia">Acadia</a></i><br />
Needles: US size 5<br />
Mods: I worked 1 less repeat of the last section because I ran out of yarn. Also only used 5 buttons (pattern calls for 7). I didn't want them to weight down the shawl too much, especially since it was slightly shorter than called for. I used backing buttons since my buttons had shafts but they have a tendency to pop their way through the yarn overs so I might have to adjust how I sewed them on.<br />

Someone posted on one of the main Ravelry boards why people put their cats on their shawls and take a picture. The lady obviously has never had a cat before in her life. Dino had to come investigate during my photoshoot. He wasn't too into it though and didn't plop down. He much prefers cardboard :o)crookedknitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09225182364421015474noreply@blogger.com0
